Accepting a gift of significant value (like sports tickets) from an active bidder completely compromises that objectivity. Even if the client insists the gift is purely for a "long-standing relationship" and the member believes they will not be influenced, the perception of bias to other bidders, the employer, and the public is highly damaging. It creates an appearance of bribery or favoritism. It is explicitly described as conduct that demonstrates a lack of knowledge, skill, or judgment in the provision of professional services. This goes significantly beyond mere carelessness or a minor administrative mistake; it indicates that the practitioner fundamentally lacks the technical ability or the cognitive judgment to perform their duties safely, thereby endangering the public or failing to meet the accepted technical standards of the profession. While conduct that harms the profession's reputation or is detrimental to the public interest might constitute "unprofessional conduct," "incompetence" strictly relates to the practitioner's technical and mental capacity to execute their technical work. Regulatory bodies like ASET take allegations of incompetence extremely seriously, as an incompetent practitioner poses a direct threat to the primary mandate of the organization: the absolute protection of public safety and welfare.

Participating in a hiring panel where a close friend is a candidate represents a direct and significant conflict of interest. The ASET Code of Ethics requires regulated members to act with absolute integrity and to avoid conflicts of interest, but crucially adds: "where such conflict arises, fully disclose the circumstances without delay to the employer or client." Keeping the relationship a secret (Option B) is highly unethical and fraudulent, as it deprives the employer of a fair, unbiased hiring process. This involves evaluating academic credentials, assessing practical work experience, administering professional practice examinations, and ensuring applicants have good character. By acting as the gatekeeper, the PRO ensures that only competent, qualified individuals are legally permitted to use protected titles and practice engineering technology independently. While PROs may occasionally publish relevant information or coordinate with other bodies, these are secondary functions. Crucially, a PRO is not a union or an advocacy group; its purpose is not to seek employment opportunities, negotiate wages, or protect the financial interests of its members (Option C). Its overriding duty is regulatory—ensuring the competency of its practitioners to safeguard public welfare.

Harassment, including sexual harassment, is a severe violation of professional ethics and occupational health and safety laws, regardless of whether it occurs strictly on company premises or at an after-work party connected to employment. The ASET Code of Ethics requires members to promote health and safety within the workplace, which includes psychological safety and freedom from harassment. When a colleague confides such an incident, doing nothing (A) or dismissing it as irrelevant (D) is unprofessional and lacks empathy. However, because the member is relying on hearsay and did not witness the event, they should generally not make a formal complaint on the victim's behalf without their consent (B), as this strips the victim of their agency and can complicate investigations. The most ethical, professional, and supportive first step is to empower the victim by strongly encouraging the colleague to report the incident directly to Human Resources or the appropriate internal authority so that a formal, legally sound investigation can be initiated.
