The ASET Code of Ethics requires members to act with integrity and fidelity toward their employers. Equipment, materials, software, and data provided by an employer are strictly the property of that employer, intended to be used for the execution of the employer's business. Taking a work laptop for outside volunteer activities without permission (Option A) is a misuse of company assets and a breach of trust. However, it is not inherently an unresolvable "conflict of interest" (Option B) to volunteer, nor is it absolutely unethical under all circumstances to use company gear for charity, provided transparency is maintained. Many organizations actively encourage community volunteering and are happy to lend resources for such causes. The ethically correct first course of action is simply to seek explicit permission from the employer (or IT department) to use the work laptop for the charity meetings. If the employer approves, the ethical dilemma is fully resolved.

Tort law is a branch of civil law that deals with civil wrongs (other than breach of contract) that cause harm or loss to another party, resulting in legal liability for the person who commits the tortious act. In this scenario, the regulated member publicly posted negative comments that allegedly harmed the competitor's business reputation and sales. Even if the member believes they were justified, making public statements that damage another organization's financial standing without utilizing proper regulatory or legal channels exposes the member to a civil lawsuit for damages. Furthermore, the ASET Code of Ethics requires members to conduct themselves with fairness and courtesy toward clients, colleagues, and others. Publicly smearing a competitor online is not only a potential tort but also highly unprofessional conduct.

This scenario involves intellectual property rights, copyright law, and professional integrity. Textbooks purchased for studying are generally the personal property of the buyer (the physical copy, not the copyright of the text) and can be legally resold on the secondary market under the "first-sale doctrine." Therefore, selling the textbooks is perfectly ethical and legal. However, practice exam questions created and distributed by ASET are the exclusive intellectual property of the regulatory association and are protected by copyright. They are often provided under a strict user agreement intended for personal study only. Copying, reproducing, distributing, or selling ASET's proprietary exam questions is an act of copyright infringement and intellectual property theft. For a regulated professional to engage in such behavior is a severe breach of the ASET Code of Ethics, which mandates members act with integrity and uphold the law. Thus, the member must only sell the textbooks and destroy or keep the copied exam materials.
