Nutanix Files is the scale-out file-storage service designed to provide SMB shares and NFS exports for unstructured data. Typical use cases include user home directories, roaming or virtual-desktop profiles, departmental shares, application logs, archives, and general enterprise file services. Files deploys File Server VMs that present the client-facing file protocols while using the Nutanix distributed storage layer underneath.

Nutanix Move is a workload-migration utility used to transfer VMs between supported source and target platforms; it does not provide file shares. Nutanix Volumes supplies block-storage services, commonly exposed through iSCSI, for applications that require block devices rather than SMB or NFS file systems. Nutanix Objects provides S3-compatible object storage and is intended for applications using object APIs rather than conventional file protocols.

The presence of SMB, NFS, home directories, and user profiles makes the use case specifically file-oriented. Nutanix X-Ray is an automated testing and benchmarking framework that runs repeatable scenarios against hyperconverged infrastructure targets. It uses realistic workload generators and controlled infrastructure events to evaluate performance, resilience, scalability, data integrity, and availability. Its scenarios can simulate conditions such as VM cloning, snapshots, migrations, node failures, node power-offs, and sustained storage workloads.

X-Ray is intended for evaluation and test environments rather than active production clusters. The resulting metrics and reports allow architects and administrators to compare configurations and determine how an environment behaves under representative production-style demand and failure conditions.

Nutanix Move migrates workloads between supported platforms and does not benchmark infrastructure behavior. Nutanix Collector gathers environmental information for assessment and sizing activities but does not generate simulated application loads. Nutanix Foundation images nodes and deploys or configures clusters; it is not a performance-testing framework.

Prism Element is accessed through HTTPS on TCP port 9440. An administrator connects to the cluster virtual IP address or an appropriate Controller VM address using a URL in the form https:// < cluster-or-CVM-address > :9440. After authentication, Prism Element provides cluster-level information and administrative functions for hardware, storage, VMs, alerts, health, upgrades, and configuration.

TCP 443 is the conventional HTTPS port used by many web applications, but it is not the standard Prism Element web-console port tested here. Ports 8080 and 8443 are also commonly used by other web applications or management interfaces but do not represent the default Prism Element GUI endpoint.

Port 9440 is also important for several Nutanix management-plane communications. For example, connectivity between Prism Central and registered Prism Element clusters requires access to the Controller VM or cluster virtual IP addresses on this port. Firewalls, access-control lists, proxy configurations, and security devices must therefore permit the required traffic between authorized management systems.

The use of HTTPS provides encrypted browser communication, but the administrator should still deploy trusted certificates, restrict management-network exposure, and apply role-based access controls.

An ERR status means that the NCC plugin failed to execute successfully. In this case, the plugin exceeded its allowed execution period and timed out. Because the check did not complete, NCC cannot determine whether the tested cluster component is healthy or unhealthy. Option C is therefore the accurate interpretation.

ERR must not be treated as equivalent to FAIL. A FAIL result indicates that the check executed and identified a condition that did not satisfy the required health criteria. By contrast, ERR describes a problem with the health-check execution itself. The administrator should review the accompanying message, verify the applicable services and connectivity, and rerun the check. Persistent execution errors may require collecting NCC logs or engaging Nutanix Support.

A warning or an unexpected but noncritical condition is represented differently. INFO supplies contextual information that does not constitute a failure, while WARN identifies a condition requiring review. The timeout result cannot validate the cluster’s state, so the underlying area remains unconfirmed until the check completes successfully.

AOS supports live vDisk migration between storage containers while the vDisk remains attached to a powered-on guest VM. The VM does not need to be shut down or deleted. This capability allows administrators to move individual vDisks or all eligible vDisks associated with a VM to a container providing different storage settings.

Storage-container properties can include replication factor, encryption, compression, deduplication, and erasure coding. Migrating a vDisk to another container is therefore a controlled method of changing the storage characteristics applied to that disk without interrupting the running workload.

The operation does not require cluster maintenance mode, and existing snapshots do not universally need to be deleted. However, important restrictions apply. Migration cannot proceed when an applicable Prism Central storage policy is configured for the associated VM. Protected VMs may also need to be removed from their protection domain or protection policy before migration. The target container must have sufficient free capacity, and operations such as cloning, resizing, or taking new snapshots may be blocked while migration is active.

The essential requirement tested is that the VM may remain powered on during the storage-container migration.

The active licenses must be reclaimed before the cluster is destroyed. Reclaiming or unlicensing the cluster releases its assigned entitlement so that the available capacity can be applied to another qualified Nutanix cluster. Nutanix explicitly lists license reclamation as a prerequisite for cluster destruction.

Destroying a cluster without first reclaiming its licenses can leave the entitlement associated with a cluster that no longer exists. The licenses are not guaranteed to return automatically merely because the underlying nodes were reimaged, removed, or decommissioned. This can prevent the organization from assigning the purchased capacity to the replacement environment and may require licensing remediation.

The proper workflow is to verify the cluster’s current licensing state, use License Manager to reclaim or unlicense the applicable entitlement, confirm that the capacity has returned to the available license inventory, and only then proceed with cluster destruction. Nutanix Support may assist when a cluster is already inaccessible or was destroyed without reclamation, but contacting Support is not the standard required workflow.

Nutanix licenses are generally reusable and portable according to their applicable terms, so option C is also incorrect.

A two-node cluster lacks the natural majority available in a conventional cluster containing three or more voting members. If communication between its two nodes is interrupted, each node could otherwise interpret the other node as failed and attempt to continue independently. That condition creates a split-brain risk because both sides could consider themselves authoritative.

The external Witness VM supplies the independent arbitration required for the two-node configuration. It is deployed in a separate failure domain and maintains communication with the cluster. During a node or communication failure, witness participation allows the cluster to distinguish the surviving authoritative side and avoid both nodes independently continuing cluster operations. Separating the witness from the two data-bearing nodes is critical because placing all voting components in the same failure domain would undermine the tie-breaking design.

Prism Element is the local cluster-management interface, while Prism Central provides centralized management across clusters. Neither substitutes for an independent quorum witness. Foundation Central supports centralized discovery and deployment activities and does not arbitrate two-node cluster ownership. Multicloud Snapshot Technology is a Nutanix disaster-recovery and data-mobility capability that replicates VM and Volume Group snapshots directly to supported object storage. Supported targets can include Nutanix Objects and validated hyperscaler services such as Amazon S3 or Azure Blob Storage, depending on the deployed MST and platform versions.

Object storage supplies a durable and cost-effective repository without requiring a fully sized recovery cluster to remain continuously active. During recovery, the protected snapshots can be rehydrated or restored to a Nutanix Cloud Platform environment. MST integrates with Prism Central protection policies and recovery plans, providing a consistent operational workflow across on-premises, edge and public-cloud deployments.

MST is not limited to bare-metal servers, native-cloud VMs or one fixed NC2-to-on-premises direction. Its defining characteristic is the use of supported object storage as the snapshot-protection target and its ability to support recovery wherever the compatible Nutanix Cloud Platform is available. Option C therefore provides the broad and technically correct definition.

The exhibit displays the Cluster-wide Controller Latency metric, which represents the average time required for I/O operations to be processed by the cluster’s storage controllers. Although the chart contains a latency spike, it does not establish that the cluster lacks SSD capacity or that a Controller VM is undersized. The first diagnostic action should be to determine whether a storage policy, particularly a storage Quality of Service configuration, is limiting the VM.

Storage QoS can impose an IOPS limit on a VM. When the workload reaches that limit, I/O requests are delayed to enforce the configured policy, producing elevated latency even when the physical storage subsystem has sufficient capacity. Nutanix documentation specifically notes that a maximum-IOPS configuration can cause higher latency to appear for the affected VM.

Migrating the VM to another host is unlikely to resolve a policy-enforced storage limit because Nutanix storage is distributed across the cluster. Increasing CVM memory or purchasing additional SSDs would be premature without evidence of sustained resource exhaustion.
